WorkPool is a server-based application. You can access the WorkPool server from any PC or MAC on the same network (LAN, WAN or VPN) through a normal Internet Browser.

Hosting your WorkPool:

WorkPool provides a cost effective hosting (cloud) solution for clients who do not wish to provide and maintain their own WorkPool server. This hosting service includes additional backup and redundancy options to ensure your data is protected and will alleviate the need for clients to maintain their own technical infrastructure. For more information please contact our Support Department.

Browser Guidelines:

Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 8 or higher) and Mozilla Firefox (version 8 or higher). Other browsers (including mobile variants) may allow for general WorkPool operations to a certain degree, however due to the variety of browsers in use, it is not possible to support them all at this stage.

WorkPool Server Guidelines:

Hardware:

Please Note: The Server specifications listed below are guidelines only and the actual server performance and requirement will vary according to the amount of users and modules used in WorkPool as well as client data volume and management of the database. WorkPool Server hardware will need to be maintained and upgraded periodically by the client to keep in line with WorkPool features and updates. WorkPool does not take responsibility for setting up, configuring or supporting the clients network environment, P.C. hardware or third party software. This includes, but is not limited to external access to WorkPool and backups.

General Server Guidelines:

  • Single core systems may work fine for small sites, however will not support growth above 5 - 10 users (at most).
  • More RAM is always preferable
  • Hard drives may be configured for RAID, however due to the various configurations and dependencies as well as possible risks involved in setting up and monitoring, such configurations, if required, must be done by yourself or your IT service provider. This is not a service offered by the WorkPool Support department and we will be unable to directly support it.
  • For more than 35 Users, we recommend contacting us with the number of users you intend to have so we can better cater for your server needs

Server Operating System:

Please Note: Unless the server is hosted with us, the installation, configuration and maintenance of the Server Operating System is the responsibility of the client and not WorkPool Support. Clients must take note of the guidelines below to ensure their server is ready for the installation to take place. Technical support and assistance as may be provided by WorkPool Support is limited to WorkPool related questions only. WorkPool does not provide support for configuration of modules and programs outside of our own system requirements. Configurations and support for these may vary depending on the type and version of the operating system you are using.

  • Debian variants of Linux. We use and recommend Ubuntu Linux Server Edition (64bit version preferred).
  • Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 (x32 and x64 variants)
  • Windows Small Business Server and variants: These variants may come bundled with software packages that interfere with our server deployment. Please contact us BEFORE installing these OS's on your proposed WorkPool server.
  • Other Linux variants: These variants may or may not support the protocols and packages we require. Please contact us BEFORE installing your proposed server with these variants.

Server Installations:

Due to continuous changes, improvements and updates, as well as the complexity around configuring an optimal environment to ensure the various systems to work together, installations are performed by qualified WorkPool Engineers only. The client would therefore need to provide the WorkPool Support department with remote access to the server to be installed for an Engineer to complete the installation. The cost of an installation is typically fixed at R800 for remote installations and R1,150 for an onsite installation in the Cape Town area. Fees exclude VAT, where applicable. Clients from other countries will be quoted in their own local currency.
